I have accompanied singers for the past four decades, and it is a role that I have always found rewarding because I find the union of piano with voice so incredibly satisfying. Over the past few years I have moved from working with larger groups to smaller ensembles and individual coaching, and the Singers’ Forum has been a natural progression along this path.
I began my journey as a chorister at Durham Cathedral where I had the privilege of singing every day in that vast and glorious setting, so it has been ever since childhood that music has been fundamental to my understanding of the world. Later I studied Piano and Organ at the Royal College of Music, following which I went to York to complete a PGCE.
Since then most of my musical career has been based in the East Midlands. I have run school Music Departments as well as been accompanist to the Nottingham Harmonic Society and the Nottingham Bach Society. I also spent eight years as accompanist to the internationally renowned girls’ choir, Cantamus, with whom I performed with in China, Malaysia and various European countries. As an examiner for the Associated Board I have travelled throughout the UK, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong and Malaysia. In this role I have been able to constantly reflect on the whole area of musical performance.
If you have a love for singing then I would like to play for you, because to accompany people who want to sing is something which always inspires me.
